These papers include letters (1797-1851), letterbooks (1811-1844), registers (1807-1815), and miscellaneous manuscripts.

This volume begins with lecture number 23 (1826 December 13) and ends with number 59 (1827 February 21) of Silliman's lectures at Yale College.

These letters are from Rutherford to Bertram Borden Boltwood, the Yale University chemist who worked with Rutherford on his scientific study of radioactivity and the structure of the atom. There is much information concerning professional activities and colleagues.

The correspondence is written chiefly from Priestley in America (1790-1802). The printed works include Priestley's "Syllabus of a Course of Lectures on the Study of History" (1765), John Aikin's "Heads of Chemistry" (1781), and a catalog of books belonging to the Warrington Academy (1775).

Emma Weigley was a Professor of Nutrition and author of many publications on the topic. From 1964 to 1971, she wrote her doctoral dissertation about Sarah Tyson Rorer (1949-1937); a dietitian, educator, author, and editor of home economics and dietetics publications and cookbooks. This collection was assembled by Weigley as part of her research on Sarah Tyson Rorer. She wrote it initially for her dissertation, which was later published as part of the American Philosophical Society Memoirs series, "Sarah Tyson Rorer, The Nation's Instructress in Dietetics and Cookery". The collection includes Emma Weigley's correspondence (1964-1972) of letters between Weigley and potential information resources as well as her research notes. The materials from Sarah Tyson Rorer are primarily related to the Pension Fund (1933-1937) and her writings some of which are photocopies or on microfilm. There are also some photographs and negatives of Rorer and her cooking school.

These are notes of lectures and experiments made at Paris as a student at the Jardin des Plantes. The volumes are entitled: Botany & Agriculture (with a large portion actually on electrical machinery); Trees and Shrubs; Chemistry, Physics, Mineralogy; and Zoology.

Better known to the English-speaking world by the name under which he published most of his works, Jean-Hyacinthe Magellan, João Jacinto de Magalhães was born on November 4, 1722. His work focused primarily on scientific instruments, and is credited with introducing English scientific instruments, and the work of Joseph Priestley (APS member 1785) to the scientific community in France. The João Jacinto de Magalhães Collection consists of eleven letters written by Magalhães in French, and addressed to correspondents in France dealing primarily with the manufacture and distribution of telescopes and optical instrumentation.

Chiefly correspondence with Alexander John Gaspard Marcet on chemistry, with references to Sir Joseph Banks, Jean Francois Berger, Johan Jakob Berzelius, Jean-Baptiste Biot, and others; a few letters to and from John Bostock, Thomas Cooper, John Wilson Croker, Giovanni Fabbroni, and Henry Penneck.

The collection consists of correspondence, notes, memoranda, extracts from publications, reprints, drafts of essays, poems, magazine and newspaper articles, comic strips, popular songs, and other material on bioluminescence, collected principally between 1945-1959 for his History of Luminescence from the Earliest Times until 1900 (American Philosophical Society Memoirs 44, 1957). Other topics are chemistry, military medicine, natural history, and professional associations.

Benjamin Silliman (1779-1864, APS 1805) was a scientist and educator. As a professor of chemistry at Yale University from 1802 to 1853, and pioneering teacher of chemistry, mineralogy and geology, Silliman was largely responsible for the conversion of Yale College to Yale University, with strong medical and scientific departments.

Principally covering botany and agriculture, this collection includes many manuscripts on trees, shrubs, and plants of different species, copies of botanical essays by others, essays on fruit trees, etc., by Auguste Denis Fougeroux de Bondaroy (1732-89), notes and drafts for the latter's revision of Duhamel's Traité des Arbres et Arbustres. Also miscellaneous essays, sketches, and memoranda on bones of birds and animals, electricity, fish, steam engines, ventilation, temperature and air pressure, mathmatics, paleontology ("Observations sur les os d'éléphants fossiles"), chemistry, metallurgy, entomology, architecture, taxidermy ("Méthode pour empailler les oiseaux"); lists of plants; notes on England, Canada, Mexico, China; notes of reading in Pliny, John Evelyn, Alexander Russell, William Derham, and others. An unpublished translation of Jethro Tull's Horse-Hoeing Husbandry, with additions and revisions by Duhamel du Monceau. An alphabetical catalogue of Duhamel's gardens, prepared by Fougeroux de Bondaroy. The collection has manuscript material in pre-publication form along with published material with marginalia for improvements of later editions. There are a multitude of sketches, botanical materials and seed packets. The collection includes lists of American trees and seeds shared with European scientists. Benjamin Franklin acts as a go between French and American botanists and John Bartram sends seeds to France from his garden. Also correspondence (ca. 170 pieces) with, among others, Peter Collinson, Duc d'Aven, Duc de Noailles, Louis J. M. Daubenton, Mathurin Jacques Brisson, Jean François Gauthier, Comte de La Galissonière, Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, Emerich Vattel. Personal and professional correspondence of the chemist Robert Hare, including drafts of letters to editors of journals on such varied topics as fish guano, slaughterhouses, paper money, and the meaning of the term "Yankee annexations." The collection originally contained over 300 scrolls, since disbound, which contained drafts of letters, essays, and lectures, composed by Hare on ordinary sheets of paper, then pasted end to end, and rolled up. The essay and lecture topics include: chemistry, storms, slavery, currency, fire-fighting, capital punishment, railroads, the Smithsonian Institution, Michael Faraday, religion and Spiritualism, riots in Philadelphia, epidemics, underwater blasting, and Ralph W. Emerson; there is some verse. The collection also contains an account book of Hare and his wife, 1806-1829 (180 pp.; B/H22#3); a volume by Hare on Cyclones (tornadoes), n.d. (ca. 60 pp.; B/H22#4); and Samuel Powel, Jr.'s "Short notes on a course of antiquities at Rome... under M. Byre Antiquarian," 1764. (60 pp.).
